Tenzin Norbu was born in 1971 in Dolpo, Nepal, into a family of painters whose lineage stretches back more than 400 years. Norbu is well-known in Nepal for his fusion of traditional art and contemporary illustration in his innovative rendering of landscapes, many of which feature scenes of traditional life in the high Himalayas. Norbu’s work has appeared in many international publications, including Caravans of the Himalaya (National Geographic Publishers, 2005), National Geographic magazine, as well as the feature film Himalaya, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999. He is the illustrator of four children’s books, and exhibits his paintings regularly in Nepal and abroad. His work is currently held in many private collections and museums. Along with the photographs of Eric Valli, director of Himalaya, his work was featured in a major exhibition at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, in 2002. Tenzin Norbu is also actively engaged in preserving the traditions of his isolated homeland, where he still lives. He founded the Kula Ri Mountain School in his native Panzang Valley, creating educational opportunities for the children of this remote region. He divides his time between the Dolpo region and Kathmandu, Nepal.
